Pre-workout Supplements – Everything You Need To Know

Man preparing for a jog

Fitness supplements can be a very confusing world. You’ve probably heard lots of complicated acronyms, advice that contradicts and baffling terminology. But don’t worry, here at Kinetica we’re going to give you the answers to all the questions that you may have about pre workout. Without further ado, let’s get to it with the most important question…

What is pre workout?

As the name suggests, pre workout is a supplement that is meant to be taken prior to exercise. Fitness trends used to prioritise the importance of a pre workout snack, so many would rush to eat a banana or a protein bar.

Whilst this may be beneficial for increasing your protein intake and mildly increasing energy levels, many people are still left feeling fatigued before they train. The focus has now shifted towards pre workout supplements to boost energy.

Pre workout is a supplement that boosts athletic performance, cognition and endurance whilst working out. It can help boost your athletic strength so that you can reach your optimum performance level whilst exercising.

The supplement usually comes in a powdered form and is mixed with water in a shaker and consumed up to 30 minutes prior to working out.

What’s in my pre workout, is it safe?

Like any fitness supplement, the safety depends on the amount you use, the frequency that you intake it and the person using it. A vital tip for supplement consumption is to make sure that you know what you are putting into your body and look at the ingredients in your pre workout. Ensure that your supplement is tested and approved by an independent third party.

What pre workout ingredients should I look out for?

The ingredients in pre workout vary depending upon the product and brand but most include a range of vitamins, BCAA’s and caffeine. You may be thinking ‘Oh no, another acronym! What are BCAA’s?’ well don’t worry, you can read our guide on BCAA’s which breaks down what they are, what they do and why you might need them.

BCAA stands for branched chain amino acids and has many benefits including the prevention of muscle breakdown, decreased muscle soreness and can help prevent muscle fatigue.

Pre workout also includes caffeine which has been shown to dramatically improve an athlete’s performance in a range of studies. If you are to look for one ingredient in your pre workout make sure that it is caffeine.

Pre workout and caffeine

If you’re one of the lucky ones who doesn’t need coffee to get through the day, then firstly we salute you and your energy levels, but we don’t advise that you overload straight away on the pre workout.

However, if you are wanting to dip your toe into the pool of pre workout supplements then maybe start with a single scoop and build your intake up to the recommended two scoops. Side effects of caffeine can include an increased heart rate, so if you are not used to caffeine then make sure you slowly introduce yourself into pre workout.

Many pre workouts contain caffeine which helps to boost alertness, energy levels and allows muscles the ability to generate power which is great to have when tackling a big workout.

Pre workout also includes some vitamins which aid health benefits including:

  • Vitamin B7 (Biotin) – which helps promote the growth of hair, skin and nails.
  • Vitamin B1 (Thiamine) – which can be found in many beans and nuts and can help boost the immune system.
  • Vitamin E – wards off Alzheimer’s disease.

Our range of pre workouts are gluten free and contain no added sugar.

When’s best to take pre workout?

Pre workout is designed to be taken dissolved in water, for the benefits of the supplement to get into the bloodstream it is recommended to take around 30 minutes before your gym session.

Some of the ingredients in pre workout come into effect immediately such as caffeine. However, other ingredients need to be taken over a sustained period before the advantages start to show. That’s why we recommend taking pre workout before every workout as the consistency can help ingredients to maintain muscle mass.

How long does pre workout last?

The lasting effects of pre workout depend on how sensitive you are to caffeine. Pre workout usually lasts 3-6 hours but the full effects can be felt for around 45 minutes.

Cons of Pre Workout

Overstimulating

Pre workout can be overstimulating to those who don’t frequently use caffeine based supplements. Ease into them gently!

Timing

Remembering to take the pre workout at the right time can be an inconvenience. Planning ahead can be tricky, so make sure you time your pre workout shake carefully otherwise you might start to feel the benefits before you can actually put them to use.

Shutting off

Lots of people have busy schedules which often means that training can be pushed to the evening after work. If this is the case then winding down after an intense workout may be difficult if you have taken some pre workout.
